By now, you may have heard about the proposed homeless shelter for 6144 SE Foster Rd, next to the 7-Eleven at the corner of Foster and Holgate.
The neighborhood association received notification on December 8, 2017, through an email from Denis Theriault, and there was a community meeting on December 18, 2017 at the SEIU building. In advance of the community meeting on December 18th, the Joint Office of Homeless Services released an FAQ document, found here.
At the community meeting, many questions were raised and some answers were given, but it was clear that there is a lot of concern in our neighborhood regarding what a shelter might mean. People shared concerns about how the shelter will affect safety and cleanliness in the nearby vicinity. Some were concerned about the proximity to schools and daycare. And still others were concerned about what would happen to our homeless neighbors if a shelter did not go in.
At the Mt. Scott-Arleta Neighborhood Association meeting on Wednesday, January 3rd, we will take some time to address what concerns we can. We will then collect additional unanswered questions from the neighborhood and purse those answers with the Joint Office of Homeless Services, the city, and the county in order to inform any future support or action the neighborhood may take.
Please join us on Wednesday, January 3rd, at 6:30 PM at Mt. Scott Community Center to have a positive and productive discussion about this new proposal.
