MSANA & MakeWith Sustainable Stitching: Visible Mending – Upcycled Flags

This workshop is sponsored by the Mt Scott-Arleta Neighborhood Association with generous support from the Portland Street Plazas Program at PBOT
Learn to give your worn-out clothes new life AND create a one-of-a-kind art installation for the Arleta Triangle.
In this hands-on, 2-hour workshop you’ll learn the art of visible mending and creative reuse. We’ll go over three practical hand-sewing techniques—including patching, seam repair and basic embroidery—that can be used to mend garments or create beautiful new designs from damaged materials. You’ll apply your new skills to create a unique, upcycled fabric flag that will become part of a collaborative community installation in the Arleta Triangle.
Whether you’re here to fix, embellish, or simply experiment, you’ll walk away with transferable skills to keep your clothes in circulation longer—and a handmade contribution to a vibrant shared space.
No experience necessary; just bring curiosity and a willingness to stitch with care.
– This workshop takes place outside in the Arleta Triangle. Please dress for the weather!
– You are welcome to bring your own fabric scraps to contribute to the flag project OR a clothing item you’d like to practice mending
